Choosing a Balluff machine-vision camera and lens
Balluff builds machine vision on open standards. We were one of the 21 founding members of the IO-Link consortium in 2006, and we contribute to the camera standards the industry runs on: USB3 Vision, GigE Vision, and GenICam. Our cameras and sensors connect over those standard protocols, so you can run them alongside the equipment and software you already use, and the data they produce stays on your own systems. You buy the hardware. The data is yours. No runtime license, no per-image fee.
How the selection works
Good vision starts from the application, not the part number. You start from what you need to see: the feature size, the field of view, and the working distance. That sets the resolution you need on the sensor, which sets the lens and the camera that deliver it. This selector walks that path and returns a ranked shortlist of camera and lens pairs with the trade-offs for each, so you can choose with the reasoning in front of you.
Example: to measure a 0.5 mm feature across a 120 mm field of view at 300 mm working distance, the selector targets the sensor resolution that yields enough pixels per feature, then recommends the tightest lens that still covers 120 mm at 300 mm.
Where Balluff fits
Balluff covers two ends of machine vision.
- For code reading and straightforward inspection (reading 1D, 2D, and direct part marks, checking presence, or a clear pass or fail feature), the BVS smart sensors install on the line and set up from a browser. For these jobs there is usually no separate PC and no programming project.
- For demanding or one-off applications, the open industrial cameras let you choose the sensor, the optics, and the interface, and you bring your own software, integrator, and AI. Balluff supplies the open camera and the open data to feed them.
A rule of thumb: if the job is a simple, repeatable read or check, start with a smart sensor. If it needs custom optics, a specific sensor, or your own algorithms, start with an open industrial camera. The tool helps you tell which is which.

The BVS smart sensors run a built-in web server. You configure them and view images from a browser, with no client software to install. There is no runtime license and no per-image fee. You keep the hardware and the data it produces.
IO-Link, with condition monitoring built in.
The BVS IDENT code readers bring IO-Link to code reading, so a single cable can carry the data without a separate Ethernet drop and IP address. The same reader reports its own condition alongside the read: temperature, vibration, signal quality, inclination, and operating time, so a maintenance team can catch a reader starting to drift before it fails.
Customize without the minimums.
When a standard product is not enough, Balluff's Custom Design and Engineering team builds a configuration for the application from a modular camera system. Standard lenses, imagers, camera bodies, interface connectors, and an on-board FPGA combine into thousands of possible configurations, with image preprocessing handled in the camera and Sony sensors available in visible, near-infrared, UV, and SWIR. Balluff will take on custom work at low volumes, including runs that larger-volume camera suppliers typically will not. Balluff is not always the lowest-priced option. The value is a camera built for your application, backed by engineering and support in both the US and Germany, instead of forcing your application onto a stock part.
Open to the AI stack you are building.
More teams are building their own AI vision: training models in Python with OpenCV, PyTorch, or YOLO and running them on NVIDIA hardware or an industrial PC. Because Balluff's cameras expose the open standards those tools build on (GenICam, USB3 Vision, GigE Vision), they drop into that pipeline and feed your models the images. Balluff is not the only camera maker that supports these standards. What is different is that the openness runs end to end: an open camera, open data, the sensors and IO-Link network blocks around the cell, and a free, no-login tool you can point an AI assistant at to find the right hardware. Will Balluff customize a camera for a low volume?
Yes. Balluff's Custom Design and Engineering team builds custom configurations from a modular system, and it will take on low-volume custom work that larger-volume suppliers often will not.
Do I need a PC or a software license to run a Balluff smart sensor?
The BVS smart sensors are configured from a built-in web server in a browser, with no client software to install and no runtime license. A camera-based system you build yourself uses your own host and software.
